Public university teachers to continue work abstention

Public university teachers have announced to continue the work abstention and sit-in programmes until their demands, including scrapping the Universal Pension Scheme ‘Prottoy’, are met.

The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) decided this in an urgent meeting held virtually on Sunday, the organisation's Secretary General Professor Dr Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan told Jago News tonight.

Mentioning that the association leaders strongly reiterated their three demands in the meeting, he said, "The all-out work abstention and sit-in programmes will continue until the demands are met."

"We hope the government will take steps in implementing the demands through discussion with teachers leaders soon," he added.

Earlier on Saturday, a 13-member team of public university teachers met with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.

After the meeting, Quader said the misunderstanding over the Universal Pension Scheme has been removed and public university teachers will come under it on July 1, 2025.

The teachers, officials, and employees of all public universities have been observing an all-out work abstention programme since July 1 demanding three-point demands, including the cancellation of the Universal Pension Scheme ‘Prottoy’.
