Teachers want nationalization of secondary education before Budget passed

A group of teachers has threatened a continuous sit-in program in front of Jatiya Press Club, Dhaka from July 11 if the government does not give a specific announcement of the nationalization of secondary education before the Budget 2023-24 is passed.

Bangladesh Teachers Association (BTA) made the threat in a human chain program in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Tuesday.

The association president principal Md Bazlur Rahman Mia presided over the program while its general secretary principal Sheikh Kawser Ahmed moderated it.

In the human chain, teacher leaders said teachers and employees of private educational institutions under MPO (Monthly Pay Order) are neglected in enjoying salary and other facilities compared to government ones.

They alleged an additional 4 percent money is deducted from the salary of teachers and employees on the account of retirement benefits and welfare trust without providing them any kind of facilities in the last few years and they called it inhuman.

They said they held programs protesting it but to no avail.

Teachers also said they observed different programs, including human chains, demanding nationalization of secondary education on March 8 ahead of the national Budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 but the government did not keep necessary allocation, including the declaration of nationalization, in the budget.

In the human chain, they said will hold press conferences across the country from June 14 to 20 seeking nationalization of secondary education and also exchange views with students, teachers, guardians, local representatives and parliament members and distribute leaflets in the same demand until June 25.
