Fast unto death for renaming dept

The students of the Department of Population Science and Human Resource Development at Rajshahi University (RU) have gone on a fast unto death demanding authorities rename the department. 

More than 60 students of the department began the programme in front of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose academic building on the campus on Wednesday morning.

They have been brought out demonstration procession, formed human chain and held press briefing on several occasions for 38 days, seeking replacement of the department's current name with Applied Statistics.

Participants in the programme said there is no department in the name of Population Science and Human Resource Development at any university of the world except Rajshahi University.

They are given BSC certificate combining two separate subjects of two different faculties, the students added.

They also said that the department was established by six teachers of the Department of Statistics which around 95 percent topics are similar to the same of Statistics or Applied Statistics department's syllabus.

"So, we will continue fast unto death until the university administration accepts our rational demand," they said.
