Prof Shamimul Alam Trust Fund established at DU

A new trust fund titled, 'Prof Dr Sheikh Shamimul Alam Trust Fund' has been established at the Botany Department of Dhaka University (DU). 

Sheikh Tahmina Awal, assistant professor of the university's Institute of Education and Research and wife of late Prof Dr Sheikh Shamimul Alam jointly handed over a cheque of Taka 20 lakh to DU treasurer Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin at the vice-chancellor's office today to set up this trust fund, a DU press release said.

DU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, dean of the Biological Sciences Faculty Prof Dr M Imdadul Hoque, DUTA president and dean of Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal and acting registrar Md Enamuzzaman were, among others, present on the occasion. 

Every year, one meritorious student, who will be to secure the highest CGPA in BS final examination from the Botany Department, will be awarded ‘Prof Dr Sheikh Shamimul Alam Memorial Gold Medal’ from this fund. Besides, some meritorious students of the department will be given scholarship. 

Prof Akhtaruzzaman paid his glowing tribute to the memory of late Prof Dr Sheikh Shamimul Alam. 

He recalled the outstanding contributions of Prof Alam to the development of the country’s education and research.

Dr Alam was a professor of the Botany Department at DU. He was born on September 2, 1960 in Kushtia and died on December 18, 2017.
