Teachers call off hunger strike after PM’s assurances
The hunger strike of teachers demanding enlistment into the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system has been called off on its sixth day following assurances of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Professor Golam Mahmudunnabi Dollar president of Non-MPO Shikhya Pratishthan Shikhyak Karmachari Federation called off the hunger strike on Friday afternoon.
He said that Sajjadul Hassan, personal secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to us this afternoon to convey the message of Prime Minister on the enlistment of Non-MPO Educational Institution into the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system.
The agitated teachers are satisfied with it. Now, they will return to their homes and start taking classes at schools again, he added.
The premier’s personal secretary was accompanied by Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain when the duo approached the demonstrating teachers around 4:30pm.
Over a hundred teachers began their demonstration since December 26, starting out with a sit-in, which later grew out to be a hunger strike until death from December 30.
