JU dorms to reopen June 8
Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities today decided to reopen the vacated student dormitories on June 8.
The authorities ordered the evacuation of residential halls suspending classes and examinations sine die on May 28 after police actions to tame campus violence following the death of two students in a road accident on May 26.
The decision to reopen the halls was taken at a syndicate meeting at the registrar building on the campus with JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Farzana Islam in the chair, JU registrar Abu Bakr Siddique told newsmen.
"The dormitories will be reopened for the students on June 8 and the academic activities and examinations will resume from July 9 after the summer, Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr vacations," the registrar said.
The syndicate also decided to give compensation to the families of the two students killed in the May 26 road accident. One member of each of the two families will get a job in the university as per qualification, he added.
Besides, all necessary measures have been taken to avert the road accidents on Dhaka-Aricha highway adjacent to the JU campus, including installation of speed breakers and Close Circuit Television (CCTV), said a JU press release.
