Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud warned Monday that protecting banks by printing money is growing difficult.

Speaking as chief guest at the Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB) iftar mahfil at the NEC Conference Room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, he said the government is struggling to bolster banks through printing money despite increased remittances and reduced hundi and money laundering.

Mahmud noted exports are up and prices down, but foreign investment remains elusive amid current conditions.

He criticised the previous government’s economic tactics, claiming excessive money printing and laundering nearly depleted reserves and emptied banks.

“They’d have collapsed,” he said, calling for a long-term roadmap over short fixes.

He also urged BTV to air a government-critical talk show.

DJFB President Hamid-uz-Zaman chaired the event, with General Secretary Abu Hena Muhib moderating.
