The Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, has warned of strict penalties for sellers imposing conditions on the sale of edible oil.

"Consumers are being forced to buy other products along with edible oil, and we have found evidence of this in the market, despite oil refiners denying it. If such practices continue, we will fine both companies and dealers," he said.

He made these remarks during a view-exchange meeting at the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday morning (February 16).

The meeting aimed to review the edible oil market and stabilise prices and supply ahead of Ramadan.

Attendees included edible oil mill owners, wholesale traders, the Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Banaspati Manufacturers Association, retail traders, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and other stakeholders.

During the meeting, Golam Mawla, president of the Edible Oil Mills Owners’ Association, urged companies to ensure market stability and called on the government not to fine retail traders for minor violations.

Retailers demanded that suppliers be penalised for imposing unfair purchasing conditions.

Meanwhile, Shafiul Atahar Taslim, director of TK Group, assured that a large consignment of edible oil will arrive on February 24, resolving any supply shortages by February 26.
