A delegation from the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) met with Anwar Hossain, Administrator of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara on January 13.

The delegation comprised Thulsi Narayanasamy, Director of International Advocacy at WRC; Manodeep Guha, Regional Director for South Asia; and Shaikat Mollik, WRC’s representative in Bangladesh.

Discussions on industry progress and challenges

During the meeting, Anwar Hossain provided an overview of Bangladesh's garment industry, emphasizing its remarkable advancements in workplace safety, labor standards, and environmental sustainability.

He acknowledged the industry’s ongoing challenges, including rising production costs driven by global and domestic factors. Hossain stressed the importance of fair pricing from international buyers, noting that inadequate pricing directly affects worker welfare and the industry's sustainability.

Call for fair pricing

Anwar Hossain highlighted Bangladesh’s reputation as a safe and ethical sourcing hub, recognized globally for its commitment to improving workplace conditions. However, he urged the WRC leaders to advocate for brands and buyers to offer fair prices that reflect the increased cost of production, ensuring the industry's long-term viability and the well-being of its workers.

WRC’s role in advocacy

The WRC delegation commended BGMEA’s efforts and reiterated their commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance workers’ rights and promote sustainable practices in the garment sector.
