Jamaat for withdrawing increased VAT, SD

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called on the government to withdraw the recently increased VAT and supplementary duty on over a hundred products, citing the adverse effects on the cost of living for ordinary citizens.

In a statement issued on Friday, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar criticised the government's approach to taxation amid rising prices of essential commodities.

"The prices of daily necessities are continuously increasing, and the government has failed to take effective steps to control the situation. In this context, the additional VAT and supplementary duty have further strained household budgets, creating widespread discomfort among the people," Parwar said.

The Jamaat leader expressed concern over the government's lack of consideration for the financial burden on citizens, emphasizing that the newly imposed taxes would raise living expenses significantly.

"While increasing taxes, the government should have ensured that there would be no negative impact on the living conditions of the common people. Unfortunately, it appears this issue was overlooked," he added.

Parwar urged the government to "immediately withdraw the increased VAT and supplementary duty on more than a hundred products" to prevent further pressure on already struggling households.

The statement reflects growing public frustration over economic challenges, with inflation and rising costs of goods remaining a pressing concern for many in the country.
