To safeguard domestic industries from unfair trade practices, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin has urged the government to implement dumping, anti-dumping, countervailing, and safeguard measures effectively.

This call was made during a day-long seminar titled “Anti-dumping, Countervailing and Safeguard Measures” held on Monday at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) conference room. The event was organised under the Capacity Building Project of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission. The Commerce Adviser attended the seminar virtually as the chief guest.

In his address, Sheikh Bashiruddin highlighted that the Chairman of the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission serves as the government-appointed authority responsible for providing recommendations on imposing trade-related duties.

He emphasised the critical role of dumping, anti-dumping, countervailing, and safeguard measures in protecting domestic industries from unfair trade. He further stressed the importance of raising awareness among stakeholders, including the government, traders, entrepreneurs, exporters, and importers.

The adviser encouraged traders to seek the assistance of the Tariff Commission for resolving tariff-related issues. He also urged them to pursue legal action to counter any unfair practices associated with the import of foreign goods.

Speakers at the seminar elaborated on the concepts of dumping, anti-dumping, countervailing, and safeguard duties. They explained that provisions for imposing these duties, aligned with relevant WTO agreements, have been incorporated under the Customs Act, 1969 and the Bangladesh Tariff Commission (Amendment) Act, 2020. The speakers also noted that the condition of domestic industries is reviewed through investigations before imposing these measures.

Commerce Secretary Selim Uddin, North South University teacher Dr Md Rizwanul Islam, FBCCI Administrator Md Hafizur Rahman, also attended the event with Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission Chairman Dr Mainul Khan in the chair.
