Largest leather industry expo begins in Dhaka
The 10th edition of Leathertech Bangladesh 2024, the nation’s largest exhibition dedicated to the leather industry, has commenced at the Expo Zone of the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).
The three-day event, running until November 23, showcases cutting-edge leather and shoemaking machinery, shoe materials, chemicals, and other ancillary products.
Shah Mohammad Mahbub, Executive Member (Additional Secretary) of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), inaugurated the event as the chief guest.
Speaking at the ceremony, he emphasised the sector’s potential, saying, “If the full potential of the leather and leather products sector is harnessed, it can significantly boost the country’s export earnings. This exhibition will play a vital role in achieving that goal.”
The exhibition serves as a crucial platform for local and international stakeholders to connect and explore innovative solutions for the sector. It is also a vital resource for new entrepreneurs seeking equipment and materials for investment in the industry.
Global participation
The event has drawn approximately 200 companies from 20 countries, highlighting Bangladesh’s growing prominence in the global leather, footwear, and travel goods markets.
Nanda Gopal, Director of ASK Trade and Exhibitions Private Limited, said, “China’s participation underscores the immense potential of Bangladesh’s leather sector. Leathertech Bangladesh has solidified its reputation as the premier networking forum for the industry.”
Industry growth and opportunities
The leather sector in Bangladesh has shown remarkable growth, with exports reaching their highest levels in five years despite recent global economic challenges. The industry, fuelled by competitive labour costs and increasing international orders, has rebounded strongly after the pandemic.
With LWG (Leather Working Group) certification, Bangladesh is now poised to expand its market reach and establish itself as a reliable supplier of high-quality leather products.
Domestic manufacturers are focusing on adopting advanced technologies to enhance quality, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
