Liquidity crisis will be resolved soon, hopes Mintoo

Abdul Awal Mintoo, former president of FBCCI and chairman of National Bank, expressed optimism that the bank's liquidity crisis will be resolved soon, following assurances from Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansoor.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the governor on Thursday, September 26, Mintoo acknowledged various challenges within the country's banking sector.

He said, "We have discussed these issues with the governor and sought support from Bangladesh Bank. The governor has assured us of all possible assistance to help the banks manage their operations."

Regarding the liquidity crisis, Mintoo stated, "We require liquidity support within the framework of banking laws. If the central bank provides the necessary assistance, the issue should be resolved by December."

In response to a question about default loans, Mintoo acknowledged that National Bank faces similar problems to other banks, including cash shortages and non-performing loans.

He emphasised that the bank is working to recover loan amounts, with plans to take legal action if necessary.

On the matter of waived interest, Mintoo revealed that discussions were held with Bangladesh Bank about possibly reversing the central bank's decision.

He added, "We will review the banking laws before making a final decision."
