Launderers won’t be allowed sleeping on pillows of banknotes: BB Governor
The Bangladesh Bank governor, Dr Ahsan H Mansur, vowed on Wednesday that money launderers will not be allowed to enjoy their illicit gains.
“I will not let them sleep peacefully anywhere in the world. They will be pursued under both international and domestic law. If necessary, we will apply international law to keep them on the run,” said the newly appointed governor during his first press conference at the office.
Dr Mansur highlighted the damage caused to many banks due to significant withdrawals from accounts. He assured that those involved in such activities will be identified and held accountable.
“We will take steps to reduce inflation immediately. Inflation has risen gradually and will decrease at a similar pace, but it will take some time to come down,” he noted.
He also acknowledged the current turmoil within various banks, attributing it to disputes over claims and ownership.
“These issues will be addressed according to the law, and we will work on banking sector reforms. We will engage with financially weak banks and take necessary initiatives in consultation with them,” Dr Mansur added.
