Vegetable prices decline; onion still high
Prices of some winter vegetables have started declining in the capital's kitchen markets because of increase in supply.
Supply of cauliflower, cabbage, radish, turnip, bean, spinach etc. marked a sharp rise in the markets.
Prices of bean has dropped by about half while ripe tomatoes decreased by Tk 30 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, prices of onion, the key cooking ingredient, are still high. Today the spice was above Tk 200 per kg.
Visiting different kitchen markets in city on Friday, this correspondent found that bean was retailing at Tk 50-60 per kg while the same at Tk 40 in wholesale.
Alamin, a wholesaler at Karwan Bazar, said here prices of bean Tk 180-200 in bulk in 5 kgs. Last week it was selling at Tk 300 in bulk in 5 kgs.
Alam, another trader at the market, said prices of ripe tomato witnessed a fall because of supply increase in the market.
At retail market, the variety was selling at Tk 70-80 per kg which was 100-120 last week that meant prices went down by above Tk 30.
Prices of cowpea and green papaya remained unchanged. The vegetables were selling at Tk 60-80 and Tk 30-35 per kg respectively.
Prices of brinjal saw somewhat decline. The item was selling at Tk 40-60 per kg which the consumers bought at Tk 80-100 last week.
Price of radish came down between Tk 20-30 per kg from Tk 50.
There was no change in the prices of bitter melon which was selling at Tk 60-70 per kg.
City's Rampura resident Shameem said prices have not declined as they thought despite having huge supply of winter vegetables in the kitchen markets.
