Bangladesh is on right track economically: Tofail

Bangladesh is on the right track economically and the government has started taking preparation for the country's graduation to middle income country from Least Developed Country (LDC), said commerce minister Tofail Ahmed.

"We're taking preparation as the country is going to graduate from LDC . . . it will get Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) after the graduation. The government is signing bilateral trade agreement with the countries which are not giving us SGP facility," said the commerce minister while taking to journalists after a meeting with Mia Seppo, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh, here today, BSS reported.

While focusing on the outcome of the meeting Tofail said Mia Seppo congratulated Bangladesh in advance as the country is going to graduate from LDC soon. Bangladesh successfully attained MDGs and it is now on the way to attain SDGs, he added.

The commerce minister said Bangladesh has given Rohingyas shelter on humanitarian ground and the whole world including the United Nations highly appreciated it.

Tofail said BNP carried out destructive activities, including arson attacks, during 2013-2015 which was politically wrong and they (BNP) realized it. BNP is now waging movement peacefully for their party leader and the government will not say anything about it. But the law and order is deteriorated and general people are affected for their movement, the police administration would take strong measures, he added.

UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo said Bangladesh is progressing fast and it will soon graduate from LDC.

Mentioning Rohingya issue, Mia Seppo said the UN will remain beside Bangladesh on this crucial issue. The UN will continue to play role in creating pressure on Myanmar for talking back all Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.
