Country’s shrimp industry needs large investment

Bangladesh’s shrimp industry can be a very crucial foreign currency earner if effective measures are taken, experts said.

However, the industry needs large scale investment to boost the farming, they said at a workshop on Thursday.

Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation in association with Fisheries Department and Bangladesh Frozen Food Export Association jointly organized the workshop on “Sustainable Development in Fisheries Sector” at Matsya Bhaban in the capital.

Experts also said that bio security should be ensured in the industry.

“We need to ensure bio security,” Director General of Fisheries Department, Sayed Arif Azad, said at the workshop.

He said that all stake holders should work together to help boost the industry.

Industry people said that there are a lot of problems including lack of sufficient good pollen, water management, bacterial disease, parasite disturbance and unsuitable bio-security management in the industry.

Among others, Academics, senior officials of the fisheries department, employees of agriculture department, Winrock international, Brac and industry people were also present at the workshop.
