BD to increase RMG export to US$50b by 2021

Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu said Bangladesh has a target to increase the export of readymade garment to US$50 billion by 2021.

"The government and the readymade garment sector have been working closely to take the garment exports to US$50 billion by 2021 and this sector has very important contribution to the rising economy of Bangladesh," Amu said while speaking as a panel speaker on Focus on the Textile and Garments at Abu Dhabi today.

Paris-Sorbonne University organized the discussion as part of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit, maid a media release of the industries ministry.

Innovation Editor of The Economist Paul Markillie moderated the discussion while executive officer of OEKO-TEX Georg Dieners, Le Tien Truong of Vietnam and Iwan Setiawan Lukminto of Indonesia took part in the discussion.

Amir Hossain Amu said 4.4 million people are directly and indirectly associated with the RMG sector and 75 of the total workforce of the sector are women. He said the government has taken a number of steps for the welfare of garment worker after the Rana Plaza incident.

The minimum wage for workers has been increased by 223 percent over the last five years, he said, adding labour law and rules have been prepared for the development of the sector.
