Hsanat’s bail plea rejected

A Dhaka court on Wednesday denied bail of Hasnat Karim, ex-teacher of North South University, who was arrested for his alleged involvement with Gulshan eatery attack case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sajjadur Rahman passed the order after hearing the bail petition filed by Hasnat.

Earlier, on Monday Hasnat filed the bail petition when police produced him before another court in Dhaka on completion of his 16-day remand.

On August 13, Hasnat was shown arrested in the case linked with the murders of 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners, in the terror attack.

Earlier on August 4, former North South University teacher Hasnat and Canadian university student Tahmid Hasib, the two survivors of the July 1 attack, were taken on remand for eight days. Later, Hasnat was remanded again for eight days.

Tahmid was sent to jail on Saturday after completion of his remand for 14 days in two phases.  

On July 1, Dhaka witnessed one of the worst terror attacks in its history as gunmen attacked Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale eatery on Road 79 of Gulshan killing 22 people including two police officers after a 12-hour long hostage situation.

Nine Italians, seven Japanese, two Bangladeshis, one Bangladeshi-American and one Indian were among the dead.

Thirteen hostages were rescued while six of the gunmen, who attacked the upscale eatery, were killed in a 50-minute army-led joint forces operation codenamed ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ on July 2, morning.

Police identified ex-army person Major Zia, Tamim Chowdhury, a Canadian expatriates and Marzan, as the masterminds of the attack and declared tk 20 lakh as bounty for them.
