No. 1 ranking in Tests is Virat Kohli’s goal: Rohit Sharma

December 2009 was the first time Team India had climbed to the number one spot in Test cricket. Now, under a relatively new captain in Virat Kohli our boys can scale that summit again.Kohli’s team will take to the field against the West Indies in the fourth and final Test of the series in Trinidad on August 18th, knowing that a win will propel them to the top of the rankings list.‘This team has decided to play in a certain way. I know it is not going to be easy to do that. Our immediate goal is to be the No.1 Test side in the world and we’re not too far away from that,’ said star batsman Rohit Sharma who finally got a chance to shine in the 3rd Test which India won after a nervy final day.India are currently on 112 rating points from 20 Tests in the ICC ranking list, just 6 points behind Australia who occupy the top spot with 118 rating points from 32 Test matches. But with the Aussies already trailing Sri Lanka 2-nil in their Test series, the top spot in up for grabs.PLAY TO WINRohit Sharma reveals that the no.1 Test ranking was Kohli’s priority when he took over the reigns of Indian Test team from MS Dhoni. Sharma says, ‘When MS Dhoni retired, we knew that Virat Kohli was going to be the next captain. The message was clear from him that we needed to play in a way where we look for results and not draws. There is a way to do that and the guys are sticking to it.’Surely Virat’s game plan has worked. He has changed the Indian team’s setup introducing a more attacking five-batsmen and five-bowler combination. With wicketkeeper Saha and specially R Ashwin stepping up their game with the bat, India have become one of the most dangerous teams in the Test arena.Virat’s formula has seen India bag a hat-trick of series wins in Tests. The 2-1 victory in Sri Lanka was followed by a 3-nil demolition of the South Africa at home and while the series in the Caribbean has been won, the no.1 ranking will be the icing on the cake.‘We have to understand situations when we are playing in a certain way and there are lots of procedures you’ve to follow. We are on our way to becoming No.1, it is not easy and we are working hard. We have had a good result in the Caribbean and have won all our last three Tests series. We are moving in the right direction and everything looks settled now. All we need to do is keep getting better as cricketers and as a team. Our target is to get better by 5-10 percent every game,’ says Rohit. The final Test of the series will be played at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad and Indian cricket fans have reasons to cheer.Since 1970 India has won 3 Tests at the venue while losing just one in 1989. While we have also drawn 4 matches at the venue during the same period the current form of Kohli’s team and coach Anil Kumble’s scientific approach to the game means that India are in pole position to get the win and the top spot in Test cricket.
