The High Court has issued a rule questioning why the Election Commission's (EC) public notice for the registration of new political parties should not be declared illegal.
The rule was issued to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the Election Commission Secretary, and the head of the Election Reform Commission, among others, requiring them to respond to the court.
The rule was issued by a bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja on Tuesday (March 18) following a preliminary hearing of a writ petition challenging the legality of the EC's public notice.
Earlier, on March 10, the Election Commission issued the public notice inviting applications for the registration of new political parties. The petition challenging the notice’s legality was filed by Hasanat Kayyum, the chief coordinator of the State Reform Movement and a Supreme Court lawyer. His lawyer, Abeda Gulrukh, filed the writ petition in the relevant section of the High Court on Sunday (March 16).
