A group of Rajshahi University students has blocked the railway tracks near the university, demanding the decentralization of Bangladesh and protesting the centralization of Dhaka University. As a result, rail communication between Rajshahi and the rest of the country has been disrupted.
The blockade began around 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 5, near the university station.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Salahuddin Ammar, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Rajshahi University, called for the rail blockade. The movement officially began under his leadership on Wednesday morning.
Shahidul Alam, the acting station manager, stated that train services were running normally in the morning. However, now all trains are stranded at the Rajshahi and Horiyan stations. Train services will not resume until the protest is called off.
