Adviser on Liberation War Affairs Faruk-e Azam said that there is no existing list of Razakars in the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, and creating one would be nearly impossible.
He made the remarks during a press conference at the ministry on Wednesday afternoon, according to BBC Bangla.
"I have not received any files regarding the list of Razakars. The Secretary has confirmed that the ministry has no copy or related documents," Azam said.
Addressing the challenges, he added, "Even if we want to, it is not feasible to create a list of Razakars or freedom fighters. Compiling such a list from events that occurred 50 years ago, without reliable documentation, is an extremely difficult task."
Azam also highlighted concerns about individuals falsely claiming the status of freedom fighters to gain benefits.
"There are complaints that some people have been listed and gazetted as freedom fighters despite not being so. This is a betrayal of the nation and a serious crime. Once confirmed, their names will be removed, and legal action will be taken," he said.
He further said that the ministry plans to establish a verification process to identify false claims. "For those who have wrongly identified themselves as freedom fighters, we may consider offering an opportunity for them to voluntarily withdraw and potentially receive general amnesty," Azam added.
The adviser emphasised the need for integrity and justice in preserving the legacy of the liberation war and ensuring that only genuine freedom fighters and their descendants receive rightful recognition and benefits.
