Police have arrested Chandan (38), the prime accused in the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chattogram, from Bhairab in Kishoreganj.
A team led by Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shahin conducted a raid at Bhairab Railway Station and arrested him at around 11:45 pm on Wednesday.
According to the police, Chandan, the primary accused in the case, had planned to travel from the station to his in-laws' house in Methorpotti, Bhairab. He is currently in the custody of Bhairab Police Station.
OC Md Shahin Mia stated that after the incident and the filing of the case, the Chattogram Detective Branch (DB) had been stationed in Bhairab for two days to apprehend the prime accused, Chandan. Initially, the DB learned that Chandan’s in-laws’ house was located in the Bhairab area but were unable to locate him. On Wednesday, using technological surveillance, they confirmed his presence in Bhairab. Following this, the local police positioned themselves at Bhairab Railway Station in the evening. At around 11:00 pm, the police conducted a raid and successfully arrested Chandan from the station area.
"Chandan arrived at the station from Chattogram by train at around 7:30 pm. He was lingering at the station, planning to visit his in-laws' house later at night. We arrested him before he could leave the area," OC Shahin said.
The OC added that Chandan is currently in custody and that Chattogram Kotwali Police have been informed. He will be handed over to them upon their arrival.
On November 25, Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Sanghati Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was arrested in Dhaka. On November 26, he was presented at a Chattogram court under heavy security. News of his arrest led to members of the Hindu community gathering at the court premises.
The court rejected Chinmoy's bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail, triggering anger among his supporters. As Chinmoy was being transported to jail, clashes broke out near the court premises. During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif (35) was attacked and killed.
