Former Chattogram Police Superintendent Babul Akter has been released from jail on bail in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
He walked out of Chattogram Central Jail around 5:35pm on Wednesday, December 4. However, he did not talk to the journalists present at the jail gate.
This morning, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division in the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order granting bail to him, rejecting the petition of his father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain seeking a stay order on his bail.
On November 27, the High Court, HC, gave Babul Akter bail in the case. Later, his father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain filed a petition in the Supreme Court, praying a stay order on his bail.
Earlier on August 18, the court of Chattogram’s 3 Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jashim Uddin rejected his bail petition.
Lawyer and family sources said Babul Akter has been in prison for more than three years in three cases but the allegations against him have not been proven. In the three cases, he earlier secured bail.
On March 13, the court of Chattogram’s 3 Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jashim Uddin ordered to frame charges against former SP and six others.
The six other accused are Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Shahjahan Mia, Md Kamrul Islam Shikder alias Musa, and Md Khairul Islam alias Kalu.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was shot and stabbed to death on the way to pick up her son from a school bus on OR Nizam Road in Chattogram city.
Later, SP Babul lodged a case against unidentified people with the Panchlaish police station in Chattogram in this connection.
Later, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hosen filed a case with the Panchlaish police station where Babul Akter was made main accused.
