Security tightened around Indian HC amid protest call

Authorities have heightened security around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following a call by a Bangladeshi civil society organisation to stage a siege in protest against an attack on the Bangladesh High Commission in Agartala, Tripura.

The attack in Agartala, allegedly carried out by members of a Hindutva organisation, has sparked widespread outrage in Bangladesh. In response, additional law enforcement personnel were deployed on roads leading to the Indian embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday (December 3).

Extensive security measures are particularly visible in Shahjadpur Banshtala on Pragati Sarani, with members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan Division establishing barricades along the road leading to the embassy. Behind them, members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and army personnel are stationed.

Local residents in the area are being allowed to pass through after thorough searches. A senior police officer from the Gulshan Division confirmed that the heightened security was implemented following social media announcements of a planned protest by an organisation called Bangladesh Civil Society.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Tarek Mahmud said: "An organisation called Bangladesh Civil Society has announced a program to surround the Indian Embassy in Dhaka, protesting the attack on our High Commission in Agartala. In response, we have bolstered security in the area."

A widely shared photo card from the organisation declares the protest as a stand against India's "hegemonic behaviour" and the attack in Agartala.

Meanwhile, the DMP’s Diplomatic Security Division has been on high alert since Monday (December 2), intensifying security around the Indian High COmmission. Checkpoints have been set up along roads connecting the embassy with Gulshan and Pragati Sarani.

A senior officer from the Diplomatic Security Division stated: "There is no immediate threat or special security alert in the area, but we have taken additional precautions considering the Agartala incident."

The attack in Agartala, which violated international law, has triggered protests across Bangladesh, including in Dhaka. Many organisations and citizens have condemned the assault, which they view as a direct affront to Bangladesh’s diplomatic sovereignty.

This protest marks another flashpoint in the growing tensions between Bangladesh and India, prompting calls for calm and diplomatic engagement to address grievances.
