The Biplobi Chhatra Parishad has demanded the immediate recall of all Bangladeshi diplomats, including the High Commissioner, from India, citing a severe security crisis.
The organisation has labeled the vandalism by extremist Hindutva activists at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Monday (December 2, 2024) as an act of terrorism.
In a statement, Abdul Wahed, the convener, and Fazlur Rahman, the member secretary of the organisation, called for urgent action to ensure the safety of Bangladeshi diplomatic personnel.
The statement condemned the attack as premeditated, asserting that far right mob were allowed to breach the Assistant High Commission's premises by breaking the main gate.
“The extremists vandalised the flagpole, desecrated Bangladesh’s national flag, and damaged property within the compound, all while local law enforcement stood by passively,” the statement read.
The group criticised the Indian authorities for only expressing regret without taking substantive action to address the issue, calling it an inadequate response to a severe violation of diplomatic norms.
The organisation noted that this was not an isolated incident, referencing a similar attack on November 28 at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. These incidents have left Bangladeshi diplomats in India feeling increasingly insecure.
“These attacks are a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention of 1961, which ensures the inviolability of diplomatic missions,” the statement emphasised.
The platform urged the Bangladesh government to bring the matter before the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the need for international intervention to safeguard diplomats.
In addition, the organisation called on the government to bolster security in Dhaka’s diplomatic zones to prevent any retaliatory incidents.
“The protection of our diplomats and the dignity of our national flag must be prioritized. These attacks cannot go unanswered,” the statement concluded.
