Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin emphasised Bangladesh’s interest in a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China to bolster trade cooperation.
He made these remarks during a courtesy meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at the ministry on Sunday (November 24).
The Adviser stated, "China is a significant trade partner for Bangladesh, and we are eager to explore areas for enhanced trade collaboration. The FTA could serve as a key step in strengthening our bilateral economic ties."
Sheikh Bashiruddin highlighted China’s decision to grant 100% duty-free market access to Bangladeshi products starting this December. "We aim to maximise this opportunity by boosting our exports," he added.
He acknowledged China’s pivotal role in Bangladesh’s economy, including its investments and job creation initiatives. "China’s investment in Bangladesh has added a unique dimension to our historic relationship. The FTA would further cement these ties," he said.
Ambassador Yao Wen expressed China's intention to increase imports from Bangladesh, focusing on mangoes, jute and jute products, and leather. He emphasised that these efforts aim to address the trade imbalance between the two nations.
The Chinese envoy announced plans for a major exhibition in Bangladesh next July, seeking the Commerce Adviser’s support for its organisation. He also requested assistance in ensuring the participation of Bangladeshi businesses in the upcoming China-Eurasia Trade Exhibition.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade and investment cooperation, underscoring the mutual benefits of stronger economic partnerships.
