Debate over AL should be resolved before nat’l polls: CEC

Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Md. Nasir Uddin has expressed hope that ongoing debates surrounding the participation of the Awami League (AL) and its allied parties in the upcoming national elections will be resolved beforehand.

“There is a serious debate regarding Awami League and its coalition of smaller parties. Let that be resolved first. We are waiting for it,” said the CEC during a view-exchange with media personnel at the Election Commission Bhaban on Sunday (November 24).

“There is a debate about whether Awami League and its allies should engage in politics. I believe this issue will be resolved before the elections. It’s not at a mature stage yet, so I won’t comment further.”

He said, “We will strive to meet the nation’s expectations by conducting free and fair elections. People have lost faith in the electoral process because they were unable to cast their votes. We are committed to restoring voter confidence with your [the media’s] support.”

The CEC emphasised that the national election date would be finalised after necessary reforms are discussed.

He pointed out the importance of an updated electoral roll, especially for the youth, and assured that the Election Reform Commission is working on essential adjustments.

“Reforms are an ongoing process. Suggestions from the commission will guide us in implementing changes that align with constitutional requirements. Without proper constitutional clarity, the electoral process could face chaos,” he added.

“I view this responsibility as a significant opportunity. The people of this country have fought for their voting rights. I am committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election with the cooperation of all stakeholders, including political parties and citizens,” said the CEC.

The CEC acknowledged discussions about proportional voting and other electoral rules, saying, “These matters depend on constitutional provisions. The Election Reform Commission is evaluating them, and their report, expected by December, will provide clarity.”

Expressing confidence in the electoral process, the CEC assured that the commission’s intentions are transparent and focused on delivering an acceptable election. “With Allah’s grace and the collaboration of political parties, citizens, and stakeholders, we can ensure a free and fair election,” he added.

Election Commissioners Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Tahmida Ahmed, Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah, and EC Secretary Md Shafiul Azim were also present at the meeting.
