3 IUT students die as bus touches live wire

Three students of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Gazipur were electrocuted when their picnic bus came into contact with a live electric wire in Sreepur upazila in the district on Saturday morning.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:00 am at Udaykhali village under Telihati Union.

The deceased have been identified as Mozammel Hossain Nayeem (24), Mostakim Rahman Mahin (22), and Zobayer Alam Sakib (22).

Mymensingh Medical College Hospital’s Deputy Director, Zakirul Islam, confirmed the deaths. He said, "Three people were brought to the hospital dead. We are yet to confirm the exact number of injured. I am heading to the emergency department."

Sources reported that around 460 students from the university’s Mechanical Engineering Department were traveling to the Matir Maya Eco Resort in Uttar Pelaid village on Saturday morning. They were in six BRTC double-decker buses and three microbuses.

The buses left the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and took a rural road towards the resort in the village of Uttar Pelaid. As one of the double-decker buses reached Udaykhali Bazar, it touched a live electric wire hanging over the market. At the time, the bus was carrying 60–70 students, some of whom were electrocuted. The injured were rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
