An attack and vandalism took place on the car of Barrister Shahjahan Omar on Thursday morning in Rajapur, Jhalkathi, around 8:45 am on Thursday. Following the incident, Shahjahan was arrested when he attempted to file a case.
Earlier, on Wednesday evening, the Rajapur upazila BNP organized a protest march against him. During the procession, a faction broke off and attacked his residence in the upazila, throwing bricks and breaking windows.
Sources said that Shahjahan, a former vice-chairman of BNP and a former Member of Parliament, was scheduled to visit Rajapur on Thursday. In anticipation of his visit, BNP leaders and activists held a protest march, with a group breaking off to vandalize his house.
Later, at around 8:45 am on Thursday, as Shahjahan attempted to enter Rajapur and crossed the Baribari area on the upazila's border, miscreants ambushed him in the North Pingri area. His car was severely damaged, and Shahjahan was injured in the attack. After the assault, he took a detour through the village and sought refuge at his house in Sangar village.
Around 10:30 am, Shahjahan tried to file a case at Rajapur Police Station for the vandalism, but BNP leaders and activists surrounded the station, blocking his access. He was later arrested based on a case filed at Kathalia Police Station.
Shahjahan stated, “I was attacked while on my way to my sister's grave in Sangar village. My car was destroyed, and I was also injured. I had planned to attend the Armed Forces Day event at Lebukhali Cantonment, but now my car is ruined, and I can’t go. I came to Rajapur Police Station to file a case, but they say I have been arrested in a case at Kathalia Police Station. I wasn’t aware of any case against me.”
Additional Police Superintendent Muhtitul Islam confirmed Shahjahan’s arrest, stating that Shahjahan is an accused in a case filed in Kathalia, and further steps are underway.
