Cabinet nods repealing law that immunes quick rentals plants

The Advisory Council has given final approval to the draft ordinance to repeal the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act 2010, pending the vetting of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

There has been significant public concern, both nationally and internationally, regarding widespread corruption and mismanagement in Bangladesh's power sector, particularly related to the execution of power generation contracts under Section 6 of the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act 2010.

On November 14, Sections 6(2) and 9 of the Act were declared illegal by the High Court in Writ Petition No. 10378/2024.

In light of these issues, the Advisory Council has made an in principle decision to repeal the Act in order to ensure greater transparency, competitiveness, and accountability in the procurement and supply of electricity and energy for the public's benefit, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
