The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former food minister Md Qamrul Islam in the capital's Uttara area on Monday night.
Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim, Chief of the DB police, confirmed the arrest of the Awami League leader.
He said, Qamrul was arrested in Uttara Sector 12, Dhaka. He is accused in several cases, including murder, and will be produced before a court with a remand prayer on Tuesday.
The former lawmaker for the Dhaka-2 constituency had gone into hiding following the collapse of the Awami League government.
Born in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur in June 1950, Qamrul served as the Public Prosecutor of Dhaka from 1996 to 2001 and as the food minister from 2014 to 2018. He is currently serving as the Joint General Secretary of the Dhaka city unit of the Awami League.
