Dengue claims 5 more lives, 1,194 new cases reported

Five more people have died from dengue fever in the past day, raising this year's death toll to 360. During the same period, 1,194 new patients were hospitalised, bringing the total number of cases this year to 73,587.

The Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Department of Health shared the update on Monday evening (November 11). 

The latest fatalities include two residents from Dhaka South City Corporation, two from the Barisal division, and one from Mymensingh division.

Among the newly hospitalized cases, 279 are from Dhaka North City, and 148 are from Dhaka South City. Additional hospitalisations include 260 in Dhaka division, 145 in Chittagong, 90 in Barisal, 140 in Khulna, 45 in Mymensingh, 68 in Rajshahi, 16 in Rangpur, and 3 in Sylhet.

From January 1 to November 11 of this year, a total of 73,587 people have been hospitalised due to dengue, with men making up 63.1% of cases and women 36.9%. Among the 360 deaths, 50.8% were women and 49.2% men.

Dengue outbreaks are common in Bangladesh during the rainy season, but the situation turned critical in June 2023. Last year saw 321,179 dengue cases, with 100,800 patients treated in Dhaka and 211,171 outside the capital. 

In 2019, the country reported 101,354 cases, with around 300 fatalities, including healthcare workers.

Dengue cases declined during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 but surged in 2021, resulting in 28,429 cases and 105 deaths. The outbreak continued in 2022, with 62,382 hospitalisations and 281 deaths.
