IIGs propose cut in internet prices

The International Internet Gateway Association of Bangladesh, IIGAB, has proposed a reduction in internet prices aiming to increase users and reach the internet to the remote areas.

The association made the proposal to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, BTRC, in a letter sent on October 29, a press release said on Wednesday.

IIGAB said it proposed to cut prices of internet in various SLUBs than existing market prices.

People concerned said if the IIGAB proposals are implemented, the internet service providers can reduce or charge from users Tk 50-75 at each mega bandwidth (in various SLUBs).

IIGAB president Aminul Hakim said they have taken this initiative to boost internet users and reach internet to remote areas.

The current government also wants to decrease internet prices, he said, adding that if this move is executive, users can use internet at affordable prices.

BTRC Chairman Maj Gen Md Emdad Ul Bari in a programme on November 4 said the government is working to lower internet prices.
