The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested Awami League Presidium member and former minister Amir Hossain Amu in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka.
Rezaul Karim Mallik, chief of the DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the arrest on Wednesday.
He stated that Amu faces several murder charges and will be presented before a court, where authorities will seek his remand after formally charging him in one of the cases.
Earlier, on August 18, the Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh Bank instructed all banks to freeze the accounts of Amu and his daughter, Sumaiya Hossain.
On the night of September 29, students surrounded a building in the capital's Bashundhara area, suspecting that Amir Hossain Amu was hiding there. After surrounding the building for about four hours and failing to find him, the protesters vandalised the building.
Amu was elected as a Presidium member of the central committee of the Awami League in 1992. Between 2006 and 2008, when Sheikh Hasina was imprisoned under the caretaker government, Amu was one of the leaders who guided the party's activities.
In 2013, he was appointed as the Minister of Land and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2014 national elections and assumed the role of Minister of Industry.
