Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, the head of the committee responsible for preparing a white paper on Bangladesh's economic situation, believes that the results of the US presidential election do not pose major concerns for Bangladesh.
He shared his views while speaking to journalists at the ‘US Election Party’ event organised at the American Centre on Wednesday morning (November 6).
He said, “Given the complex global situation, I believe the results of the US election will have far-reaching effects. For many years, the people of Bangladesh have been unable to vote for various reasons. Therefore, from the experience of other countries' elections, we hope to draw lessons for ourselves. We want to learn how a competitive electoral environment is created in a smooth situation, how the election process is managed, and how those who oversee the elections behave. We can also learn how people accept the results after the elections.”
In response to a question, Debapriya, who is also an honorary fellow at the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and convener of the Citizen's Platform for SDG Implementation, Bangladesh, added, “There are several reasons why this US election is important for all of us. The US-Bangladesh relationship does not depend solely on one party. There are multiple factors, including our trade relations, strategic interests, and geopolitical considerations. A change in the presidency doesn’t immediately alter these aspects. Therefore, there is no major concern for Bangladesh regarding this election result.”
