Denim Expo: Buyers seek stability to strengthen partnerships

Bangladesh remains the top choice for global apparel buyers, especially for denim, where its high-quality products and competitive pricing give it an edge.

Yet, while buyers are eager to do business, they emphasise the need for stable law and order to sustain trust and secure long-term partnerships, industry representatives said at the 17th Bangladesh Denim Expo in Dhaka.

“Bangladesh’s unmatched production capacity and skilled workforce make it indispensable for global fashion retailers,” said Manish Chauhan, Managing Director of Noise Jeans. “Our mid-range products, especially, are in high demand amid high inflation in export markets.”

Chauhan noted that only China competes with Bangladesh in terms of scale, but Bangladesh’s pricing and quality make it irreplaceable for most brands.

Expo highlights innovation, sustainability, and global opportunities

The 17th edition of the Bangladesh Denim Expo, organised by Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, kicked off today at the International Convention City Bashundhara. The two-day event has brought together over 45 companies from seven countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Spain, and Italy, showcasing a new vision for the future of sustainable fashion.

“The time has come for Bangladesh’s apparel sector to transform,” said Mostafiz Uddin, founder and CEO of Bangladesh Denim Expo. “Through strategic shifts, we can position Bangladesh as a global leader in high-quality, sustainable apparel by 2030.”

He emphasised that buyers value stability and governance, warning that instability could jeopardize Bangladesh’s standing as their first choice.

According to industry insiders, some top buyers have considered shifting partial orders to other countries but found costs in alternatives like India significantly higher. “While global buyers continue to choose Bangladesh, uncertainty around law and order could potentially shift their focus elsewhere,” Mostafiz warned.

A “Blue New World” in fashion and responsibility

This year’s theme, “The Blue New World,” reflects a new beginning for the fashion industry with a focus on eco-friendly practices and responsible sourcing. The expo, one of the world’s largest denim industry events, aims to highlight Bangladesh’s progress in sustainable practices, innovative designs, and advanced manufacturing techniques. Trend Zones throughout the expo present the latest innovations and showcase unique fabrics and design techniques in denim.

Key Attractions: Trend Zones and the Denim Lounge

Pacific Jeans Limited’s “Denim Lounge” is another highlight, offering visitors a glimpse of cutting-edge designs and modern denim technology. Visitors can explore the latest in sustainable fabrics, innovative designs, and see firsthand the direction of Bangladesh’s denim industry.

Panel Discussions: Securing the future of Bangladesh’s garment industry

Two high-profile panel discussions are scheduled. On the first day, the discussion, “Securing the Bangladesh Garment Industry: Meeting the Challenge,” explores steps needed for Bangladesh to evolve from a low-cost garment hub to a high-quality and sustainable one by 2030. The conversation centres on innovation, digital strategies, and adopting modern manufacturing technologies to keep pace with changing global demands.

The second-day session, “Preparing the Garment Industry for GSP+ and LDC Transition,” will address Bangladesh’s path post-LDC graduation in 2029. Panelists will discuss securing GSP+ status to maintain market access, and outline strategies to comply with global standards, manage security risks, and expand trade opportunities in key markets like the EU and US.

This discussion will also delve into how coordinated efforts between the government, industry, and international partners can create favorable trade terms, securing Bangladesh’s position as a key player in the global apparel industry.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The Bangladesh Denim Expo showcases the potential for Bangladesh’s garment industry to lead in sustainability and ethical practices. As Mostafiz Uddin emphasised, “Together, we can work towards a sustainable and prosperous future for Bangladesh’s apparel industry.” The event is more than an exhibition; it’s a declaration of Bangladesh’s commitment to evolving and thriving in the global market.
