Transport for London (TfL) will provide technical support to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to enhance transport management in three key areas: network operations, bus services, and security within the DNCC jurisdiction.
As an initial pilot, the London-based organisation will work on the route from Gulshan-1 to Gulshan-2. A TfL delegation had already assessed the existing transport conditions in Gulshan during a visit in July.
In November 2023, DNCC signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to collaborate on modernising transport systems, traffic signals, and easing congestion within DNCC’s area. This marks the first phase of their joint efforts to upgrade Dhaka's transport infrastructure.
DNCC Administrator Mahmudul Hasan on Monday met with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Catherine Cook, at DNCC’s Gulshan Nagar Bhaban office.
After the meeting, Hasan praised TfL’s modern transport management in London, noting that “by sharing expertise and experience with TfL, we can develop a more efficient, modern transport system in Dhaka.”
He emphasised that the initial pilot in Gulshan will guide the master plan for a comprehensive transport overhaul across Dhaka.
Hasan also expressed DNCC’s commitment to collaborating with other relevant departments to address traffic congestion, stating that insights from London’s bus franchise model and traffic signal system would be instrumental. “The technical advice and experience from TfL will be invaluable in easing traffic congestion in Dhaka. This initiative will further strengthen the ties between Bangladesh and the UK.”
The meeting was attended by DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mir Khairul Alam, Chief Engineer Brig Gen Md Moin Uddin, Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman, Supervising Engineer Khandkar Mahabub Alam, and other officials.
