Labour strike halts nationwide fertilizer supply from Ctg

Workers have halted the supply of fertilizers from three factories in Chattogram's Anwara, protesting against attempts by the contractor labor union to disrupt upcoming elections.

As a result, the distribution of urea and ammonia fertilizers to dealers across the country was suspended starting at 9:00pm on Friday, November 1.

The cessation of supply has left dealers in dire straits across eight districts, including Chittagong. They warn that if fertilizer deliveries continue to be interrupted, it could have severe repercussions for agriculture.

In Rangadia of Anwara, two factories operated by BCIC and a multinational company—Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL), Di Ammonia Phosphate Fertilizer Company Limited (DAPFCL), and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO)—are affected.

Approximately 320 workers from the Rangadia-Uttar Port Contractor Workers Union are responsible for loading and unloading fertilizers, with their wages paid through contractors.

The workers have stated they will not resume their duties until the scheduled elections take place on Sunday.

Nazrul Islam, General Secretary of the Rangadia North Port Contractor Workers Union, expressed concern, stating, "This labour union election has been stalled for over nine years. We had announced the election date for November 3 during a general meeting, and all preparations, including campaigning, were completed. However, a nefarious group began threatening to cancel the elections, even attacking our office and tearing down our posters and banners."

He added that the common labourers are frustrated due to the lack of administrative support in the face of these threats, prompting them to strike for the past two days and halt fertilizer supplies.

The labour organisation leader emphasised that the strike will continue until a final decision regarding the elections is reached.

Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of CUFL, remarked, “The supply of fertilizer has been stopped since 9:00pm last night. With the agricultural season approaching, any further interruption could lead to a fertilizer shortage in the country and adversely affect agriculture.”
