RMG workers set fire to army, police vehicles in Kachukhet

Protesting ready-made garment (RMG) workers set fire to two vehicles belonging to the army and police in the Kachukhet area of Mirpur 14 in the capital on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 10:00 am, turning the Kachukhet area into a battlefield during the protest, with traffic completely halted.

Sources reported that workers from a garment factory took to the streets to voice various demands. During the protest, they hurled bricks and stones at law enforcement agencies.

At one point, the protesters ignited a fire on the road and set ablaze a military vehicle and a police van. According to eyewitness accounts, workers from a factory staged a protest on Kachukhet Road in Mirpur 14, attempting to block the road. When police and military personnel tried to calm the workers, they were met with stones.

In self-defense, police resorted to baton charges. During this time, the workers vandalized and set fire to the military and police vehicles. In response, the army took a tough stance to regain control of the situation, blocking off the entire area and managing traffic. The atmosphere remains tense.

Regarding the situation, Shah Mohammad Faisal, Officer-in-Charge of the Vashantek police station, stated that police have been present on the roads since morning to control the situation. The garment workers suddenly targeted police and military personnel with bricks and stones. Eventually, they set fire to the military and police vehicles. The situation is now somewhat under control, with both police and army present at the scene.

Lima Khanam, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, confirmed that two units were dispatched to extinguish the fire after receiving reports about the blaze on a military vehicle and a police van in the Kachukhet area.
