Police get 4 days to question ex-EC secretary Helal

A Dhaka court on Friday granted police four days to interrogate former Election Commission secretary Helal Uddin in a case filed over the murder of a BNP activist.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Naznin Akter passed the order after the police produced him before the court, seeking a 10-day remand.

The police arrested him in Chattogram on Wednesday evening.

Makbul Hossain, a BNP activist, was killed in police firing when the law enforcers raided BNP's Nayapaltan central office and attacked thousands of the party men besides the office on December 7, 2022, ahead of the party’s December 10 one-point programme in the same year.

On September 30 this year, a case was filed against 256 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in this connection.

Helal Uddin served as the Election Commission Secretary during the 11th Jatiya Sangsad polls.
