Titumir students block Mohakhali road, demand separate university

A group of students of Titumir College blocked the road at the Mohakhali intersection in the capital on Thursday, demanding the establishment of a separate public university for the seven affiliated colleges.

They took their position on the main road in Amtali, Mohakhali, at 12:00 pm. As a result of the blockade, traffic in the surrounding areas came to a halt, creating severe congestion.

The protesting students said that establishing an independent university for the seven affiliated colleges is a demand of the times. Although these colleges are affiliated with Dhaka University, there has been no improvement in the quality of education, and instead, students have faced increasing difficulties. Consequently, they felt compelled to block the road.

Earlier on Wednesday, students from the seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges also blocked the road at the Science Lab intersection with the same demand for a separate public university.

On February 16, 2017, under the directive of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Ministry of Education affiliated these seven colleges with Dhaka University in an effort to improve educational quality. The colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College. Currently, the admission process, examinations, and academic activities of the students from these affiliated colleges are managed by Dhaka University.
