BNP warns against any constitutional crisis, meets Yunus

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has warned that the fallen dictator and its allies are attempting to trigger a constitutional and political crisis in Bangladesh.

His remarks came after a meeting at the residence of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday (October 23).

Nazrul Islam Khan said that the Chief Adviser urged political leaders to act cautiously and prevent any such crises.

The meeting, held at Jamuna—the Chief Adviser's residence—was part of ongoing political dialogue amid the country's volatile situation. BNP leaders Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salauddin Ahmed were also present.

"We have seen attempts by former dictators and their supporters to manipulate the political landscape. The reforms we fought for, with the sacrifice of many comrades, must be protected. Everyone must remain united to avoid a constitutional or political crisis," Nazrul said, stressing that any reforms should be based on consensus.

After reaching the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Salahuddin Ahmed, who was on BNP’s delegation that met the chief adviser, said that a constitutional crisis would arise if the presidential position were to become vacant, potentially delaying the general election. As a result, the BNP does not advocate for the president’s removal at this moment.

Salahuddin emphasised that a vacancy in the presidency would lead to both a state and constitutional crisis, hindering the country's democratic transition. He urged vigilance to prevent any conspiracies from those aligned with fascism.
