ZI Khan files for anticipatory bail in High Court

ZI Khan Panna, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, has filed a petition in the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in a murder attempt case lodged at Khilgaon Police Station in the capital.

The petition was submitted to the relevant branch of the High Court on Sunday, with a hearing expected to take place on Monday.

Earlier, on Thursday, a murder attempt case was filed against ZI Khan Panna. The case names Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and 180 others as accused.

The case was filed in connection with an incident on July 19, during a student-public movement, where Ahadul Islam was allegedly shot and beaten in an attempt to kill him. Ahadul's father, Md Baker, filed the case.

According to the case statement, on July 19, Ahadul Islam, the son of the plaintiff Md Baker, participated in a student-public protest at the Sukkur Ali Garments intersection in Khilgaon. During the protest, leaders and activists of the Awami League, its affiliated organizations, and the 14-party alliance allegedly detonated cocktails and sound grenades, and fired live bullets, alongside personnel from the police, BGB, and RAB.

The case statement mentions that the shooting was carried out with the intent to kill in order to suppress the peaceful anti-discrimination student-public protest. Ahadul Islam was shot in the left leg and collapsed on the street, after which he was further beaten by the attackers. He was initially taken to a local clinic, then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and later to the Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex in Barishal.
