Mohammadpur Robbery: 5 sacked security personnel among 11 held

A gang of robbers disguised as army and RAB personnel looted Tk 75 lakh and 60 bhori of gold ornaments from a house in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka.

In connection with the robbery, 11 people have been arrested.

Among the 11 arrested, eight were apprehended by the RAB, while the remaining three were detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police. RAB also recovered Tk 7 lakh of the looted money.

DMP Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruq Hossain confirmed the arrests and said that the investigation and search efforts are ongoing.

The robbery took place late Friday night at a businessman's house near the Beribandh area of Mohammadpur.

Lt Col Munim Ferdous, Director of RAB's Legal and Media Wing, revealed that five of the arrested individuals are former members of various security forces who had been dismissed from service.

The other three are civilians. A gold bracelet and a ring were also recovered from the suspects.

Ferdous emphasised that anyone from the security forces involved in this robbery will face legal consequences.

The robbery occurred around 3:30am last Friday, when a group of 25-30 robbers entered Abu Bakar’s home, posing as law enforcement officers. The robbers claimed they were there to confiscate Bakar’s legally registered weapon. They ransacked cupboards and stole both cash and gold ornaments from his house.

Abu Bakar reported that the robbers also entered his office, located near his flat, and looted more money. "They stayed for about an hour and left around 4:30 AM," he said. The robbers arrived in two microbuses and two private cars, with accomplices stationed outside the house.

In total, they stole Tk 75.5 lakh in cash and over 60 bhori of gold ornaments belonging to his wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Most of the cash, Bakar noted, came from the recent sale of land.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Iftekhar Hasan mentioned that the doorman had opened the gate after seeing men in army uniforms. The robbers, wearing both RAB jackets and white clothing, then proceeded to Bakar's third-floor flat.
