Mohammed Siraj assumes charge as DSP in Telangana

Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj has officially assumed his role as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Telangana after reporting to the Director General of Police (DGP) on Friday. The appointment comes as part of a promise made by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who had previously announced that Siraj would be granted a Group-I government position in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cricket and his representation of India on the global stage.

The cricketer's new role was confirmed and made official during a formal ceremony where he joined the services as DSP. Siraj, a native of Hyderabad, has risen through the ranks of Indian cricket with his hard work and dedication, becoming one of the country's leading fast bowlers. His appointment as DSP marks a significant moment in his career, reflecting his growing influence both on and off the field.

This gesture by the Telangana government is seen as a mark of honor and respect for his contributions, recognizing his efforts not just as an athlete but also as a role model for aspiring sportspeople. Congress MP Anil Kumar Yadav and Senior Congress Leader Faheem Qureshi were also present at the occasion.

Siraj last featured in the recent two-match Test series against Bangladesh where he picked up four wickets across two matches. The fast bowler made his debut for India way back in 2017 in a T20I against New Zealand but became regular mainstay in the team after a phenomenal Test debut during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 in Australia.

Siraj will next feature in the New Zealand Test series

Since then, he’s played 29 Tests and scalped 78 wickets at an average of 29.93 with three five wicket hauls to his name. He’s played decisive roles in India’s memorable Test victories in Brisbane, Lord’s in London, Cape Town in the past few years.

In ODIs, he’s picked 71 wickets from 44 matches at an average of 24.04 and starred in India’s Asia Cup triumph with career best figures of 6/21 vs Sri Lanka. In T20Is, he’s played 16 matches so far and picked 14 matches at an average of 32.28. Siraj was also a part of India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year in the USA and West Indies. The Hyderabad-born pacer has been named in the squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand set to begin from October 17.
