Myanmar navy kills Bangladeshi fisherman, injures 2

A Bangladeshi fisherman has been killed and two others suffered bullet injuries when the Myanmar navy opened fire on fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal near the Saint Martin’s Island.

The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, 32, son of late Bacha Mia, a resident of Shah Parir Dwip in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar while the injured are Mohammad Raju and Mohammad Rafique.

Quoting locals, Teknaf upazlia nirbahi officer, Md Adnan Chowdhury, on Thursday afternoon said the Myanmar Navy opened fire on Bangladeshi fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal near St Martin’s Island on Wednesday afternoon (October 9), leaving a fisherman dead and two others injured.

They also detained 50-60 Bangladeshi fishermen from six trawlers, he said.

However, the body and 10 detainees were handed over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard this morning, the UNO said, citing the family members of the fishermen.

According to the latest information, the fishermen of remaining five trawlers have not been handed over yet, he said, adding that the higher authorities have been informed about the matter.
