Action initiated against absentee police personnel: IGP

Inspector General of Police M Mainul Islam announced that action has been initiated against the police personnel who have yet to report for duty.

He made this statement during a press briefing after inspecting security arrangements for Durga Puja at Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka on Monday (October 7).

In response to a question about officers who have fled the country or failed to rejoin the force, the IGP stated, "We often face inquiries about absconding officers. So far, 17 officers involved in various cases have been arrested. Others who have not returned to work may be involved in legal disputes or other issues."

He emphasised that with a force of 200,000 members, the number of absentees—187 officers—is relatively low and can fluctuate. "Departmental action has already been taken against those who haven’t returned to duty, and they have been notified. If they fail to clarify their situation, we have no choice but to remove them from their positions," he added.

When asked about recent instances where the police seemed to take a softer stance—such as their inaction during protests at the Audit Bhaban and the movement demanding a minimum age of 35 for government service—the IGP acknowledged that the force had faced challenges.

"Forty-four police personnel were killed during the student-led protests. This impacted morale, particularly among lower-ranking personnel. We have since launched efforts to restore the police force's morale. Some older members, holding on to outdated attitudes, have been replaced by new recruits," he explained.

The police headquarters also confirmed that 187 officers have yet to report for duty, while some senior officers were involved in controversial actions during the suppression of the recent anti-discrimination student protests.

The IGP reassured the public that all necessary security measures are being taken, particularly in light of upcoming Durga Puja celebrations across the country.
