Honest officers deserve promotion in the army: Yunus

Officers who exemplify honesty, ethical conduct, and strong leadership qualities are the only ones deserving of higher promotions, asserted Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government.

He made these remarks during his keynote address at the official inauguration of the 'Army Headquarters Selection Board-2024' at Army Headquarters on Sunday (October 6). The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) shared this information in a press release.

In his speech, Yunus paid tribute to all those who lost their lives during the anti-discrimination student movement in July and August, as well as to the brave soldiers and martyrs of the armed forces who fought in the War of Independence.

He directed members of the Selection Board to prioritise professional competence, leadership qualities, discipline, honesty, trustworthiness, and overall suitability when considering officers for promotion.

"The Bangladesh Army has stood by the people during times of crisis, helping to stabilise the country by facilitating the formation of an interim government. As a result, the Army has once again earned the trust of the nation," Yunus added.

According to ISPR, this promotion board's first phase will assess eligible officers at the rank of Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel for potential promotions.

In his address, the Chief Adviser welcomed everyone to a "new Bangladesh" inspired by the student revolution.

Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman greeted Yunus upon his arrival at the venue, expressing gratitude for the Chief Adviser’s participation in inaugurating the Selection Board despite his busy schedule. The Defence Secretary and other senior army officers also attended the ceremony.

At the conclusion of the event, the Chief Adviser took part in a photo session with the attending army officers and recorded his comments in the visitors’ book.
